Join Ocean Adventures for a fun-filled 2-day trip to Santa Barbara and San Clemente Island aboard the Magician Dive Boat. Santa Barbara Island is a small island off the Channel Islands archipelago in Southern California. It is protected within Channel Islands National Park, and its marine ecosystem is part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The island is located about 38 miles from the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast of Los Angeles County, near Ventura County. With a total area of about 1 square mile it is the smallest of the eight Channel Islands. It is the southern-most island in the Channel Islands National Park. Santa Barbara Island is home to a large sea lion rookery. This makes it a favorite among SoCal divers who want the opportunity to play with Sea Lions. Pups are everywhere, cavorting among the rocks, tugging divers’ fins, and playing chase with strands of kelp.
Off the northwest point is Arch Reef, the top of which actually breaks the ocean surface at low tide. This site consists of sloping walls and, of course, the namesake arch, which is covered with cornynactis anemones, starfish, and clusters of purple hydrocoral. Red gorgonians and sunflower stars populate the rocks, and sheephead and garibaldi are plentiful. Schools of mackerel and other baitfish swirl above the reef, making for mesmerizing photo opportunities.
San Clemente Island (SCI) is the southernmost of the eight California Channel Islands. It lies 55 nautical miles (nm) south of Long Beach and 68 nm west of San Diego. The island is approximately 21 nm long and is 4-1/2 nm across at its widest point. Since 1934, the island has been owned and operated by various naval commands. SCI is home to the US Navy and is surrounded by varied underwater relief including a huge underwater arch, pinnacles and reefs. SCI gathers into one largely undisturbed place everything that seems rare at the other Channel Islands — pinnacles, steep walls, underwater arches and kelp-covered rock reefs, all populated by an unbelievable variety of marine life.
