This is a workshop-oriented class designed to introduce you to the world of DIR diving. As this is a foundational class you will receive an evaluation upon completion but it is not a pass or fail class.
The class is divided into three sections: lecture, confined water dives and open water dives. During your classroom lectures you will learn the history of DIR, and its philosophy and principles. Proper weighting and gas management will be discussed, as well as propulsion, team orientation and dive planning. You will also go over your equipment, fit any new or unfamiliar equipment and practice many of the skills on dry land. In the pool you will practice all of the new propulsion methods and skills so you can master them in a calm controlled situation before moving to the open water.
All in-water sessions are videotaped and each day will be followed by a video debriefing. In the ocean you will practice all of the skills you mastered in the pool, as well as practice diving with your team. You will get a sense of how much more fun and relaxing it is to dive within a unified team!
Required Equipment:
As DIR diving demands unification within the team there are some minimum equipment standards that must be met. We dive in a backplate-style BCD that utilizes a one-piece custom fit webbing securing it to the diver. There are no quick releases to break or Velcro to wear out. The regulator must be equipped with a 5 or 7 foot primary regulator hose for easy gas sharing, a 22 or 24 inch secondary regulator hose with a shock cord necklace securing the backup reg around the divers neck, and a SPG on a 24 inch HP hose clipped to the divers waist. Your fins must be paddle style fins, split fins are not allowed. The course can also be taken in double tanks if so desired. Please contact your instructor or anyone at Ocean Adventures if you have any questions about required gear.
Minimum certification requirements:
Any Open Water certified diver can take this course, advanced open water is recommended, as the diver will have had more time to become comfortable with the basics of diving before taking the course. Divers who are nitrox certified can breathe nitrox for the open water dives if so desired.
