Dive into the Pink
Allison Vitsky Sallmon
October used to be sort of a stressful month for me. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I was diagnosed in October 2003, so that time of year is reminder enough – but since October is also breast cancer awareness month, there is absolutely no way to escape it. I always feel drawn to the goings-on at that time of year, as breast cancer runs and walks seem to occupy every weekend of the month. But here’s my dirty secret: I always feel more drawn to getting on a dive boat and enjoying the amazing autumn dive conditions. Every weekend, I would guiltily pass groups of pink-clad survivors so that I could board a boat and get underwater.
In 2015, I got tired of feeling guilty, and I decided to see what I could do to create a breast cancer dive day. I chartered a boat, called my friends, packed a whole bunch of pink gear into my dive bag, and told everyone I’d like to see a boat full of pinked-out divers – and voila, Dive into the Pink was born! We were able to donate over $1200 to two breast cancer charities (Young Survival Coalition and Project Pink Tank) with very little planning. I made the name official shortly thereafter, turning Dive into the Pink into a nonprofit corporation and gaining 501c3 (tax-free) status.
We have three events planned for 2016– October 22 on the Asante (San Pedro) , October 30 on Waterhorse Charters (San Diego), and November 5th on the Asante (San Pedro). Although you don’t HAVE to show up with pink gear, it is strongly encouraged – and guys, it’s worth mentioning that few things are more attractive than a man confident enough to wear pink! With the help of Ocean Adventures, we’ll also be getting a percentage of pink gear sales – and once the events are over, all our proceeds will be donated to the Young Survival Coalition and Project Pink Tank.
Tickets will go on sale the first week of July at www.diveintothepink.org – and for to-the-minute updates, please like us on Facebook. We can’t wait to see you in October! UPDATE: All events are SOLD OUT! But you can still show your support by purchasing pink gear from OADC or take a look at the online auction items https://www.32auctions.com/divepink2016 – auction opens Oct 1 through Oct 8th! All proceeds are distributed to fund cancer research and patient support.
