Strangely for a guy who grew up in Southern California playing high school water polo and surfing with his friends, Spencer did not discover SCUBA diving until he started college at the University of Oregon. During his freshman year, Spencer found out that he could take the PADI Open Water course for college credit. Soon after finishing the course and completing his Open Water certification dives in a local lake Spencer was hooked. He spent the next four years taking every course the school offered, eventually earning his Divemaster certification along with a degree in underwater Archaeology.

Upon returning to California he met the staff at Ocean Adventures Dive Co. where he continued to build his knowledge and skill as a diver, training with them to become a PADI, EFR and DAN Instructor.

Spencer also spent many years working as a Divemaster and deck hand on multiple dive boats in the Southern California region and attributes much of his knowledge of local dive sites to his time spent at sea.

Spencer believes that knowledge is power and that the more you know the safer you can be. While being a teacher of new divers, he still considers himself a student of the sport continuing his education whenever possible, currently training to become a technical diver.

When Spencer is not exploring the dark depths of the ocean you will find him on the opposite end of the spectrum. Being an avid hiker and rock climber, Spencer spends every moment of his free time (not spent in the water) exploring mountain ranges throughout California.
