  • PALAU PIONEERS SHARK SANCTUARY

Palau is creating the world's first "shark sanctuary," banning all commercial shark fishing in its waters.

The President of the tiny Pacific republic, Johnson Toribiong, announced the sanctuary during one of the latest sessions of the UN General Assembly. With half of the world's oceanic sharks at risk of extinction, conservationists regard the move as "game- changing."

The Sanctuary will protect about 600,000 sq km (230,000 sq miles) of ocean, an area about the size of France.

President Toribiong also called for a global ban on shark-finning, the practice of removing the fins at sea.

FARNSWORTH - ANACAPA - CATALINA -- THE LAST FIVE BOAT TRIPS FOR 2009

With only five more boat trips to round out diving for 2009, you can choose Anacapa, Catalina and a rare excursion to the Farnsworth Bank!

Farnsworth Bank, located one and one half miles off of the windward side of Catalina has the feel of an open ocean dive site but is really close to shore. This is a very unique site to any other in Southern California, a seamount begins at 50+ feet and drops to 300 feet. Farnsworth is famous for the abundance of Purple Hydrocoral and sea life, more so than any nearby island off our Coast. Boat trips to this site are scarce so don't miss out on this one! We will be diving Farnsworth this Sunday October 25. Call OADC at 310.578.9391 to sign up and for more information. Due to the depth and conditions, you should be an advanced certified diver for this trip.

Boats have been selling out so call 310.578.9391 to reserve your spot today!

UNABLE TO MAKE THE TRIP TO COCOS? WE HAVE THE NEXT BEST THING! OCT 13 DIVE CLUB MEETING
    Hammerheads

Join us Tuesday, October 13, at Ocean Adventures for a viewing of an IMAX Film from Howard Hall, Island of the Sharks filmed on Cocos Island. Steve Ladd will also show some of the incredible pictures from his recent trip to Cocos with other Ocean Adventurers. The photo above is just one of the many he captured of schooling Hammerheads. See why many divers deem Cocos Island, one location they must dive, before they die.

The Dive Club meeting begins at 7pm, Tuesday, October 13, at Ocean Adventures. This one you won't want to miss.
