| ARCH ROCK COVE - ANACAPA ISLAND |
 |
|
Arch Rock on the east end of Anacapa Island is the
symbol of the Channel Islands National Park. Its
beauty as a surface feature is unparalleled along the
California coastline. It is 80 feet high, surrounded by
rock pinnacles, and dangerous reefs. The bark of sea
lions, cry of gulls and roar of the sea are constant. It is
truly a serene place for anybody who loves the
California ocean and the Channel Islands. This is the
closest point of the Channel Islands to the mainland -
a mere 11 miles. You'd never know; it seems a world
away
Anacapa Island is the second smallest of all the
Channel Islands, only slightly larger than tiny Santa
Barbara Island to the southeast. Anacapa is actually a
long narrow chain of three islands separated by
narrow impassible waters. Arch Rock is at the
extreme east end of the east island. As such, it is
located at a point of transition between the calm
frontside and often rough open ocean. It also lies
where, depending on direction, powerful currents are
split or joined
This is an exciting place. On the south side of Arch
Rock, reefs, pinnacles and the arch form a pocket
resembling a cove. Waters swirl and mix creating a
nutrient rich soup that marine animals love. It is a
place of beauty underwater
This is a good spot for seeing nudibranchs. Look for
yellow dorids, Spanish shawls and hermessenda.
With this many nudibranchs, their primary predator
can't be far behind. Navanax is a brightly colored sea
slug that feeds on its nudibranch cousin. Another sea
slug in abundance here is the sea hare. They feed
simply on algae

SHARKWATER - COMING TO A DIVE CLUB MEETING NEAR YOU! |
|
|
It's Movie Night at the May 13, Ocean Adventures Dive
Club Meeting, featuring the critically-acclaimed
documentary "Sharkwater."
Ocean Adventures will provide the movie, popcorn,
red
wines, soda and hot dogs (vegan dogs will also be
served).
Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with
sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and
media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-
eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as
pillars in the evolution of the seas.
Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video,
Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters
of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption
surrounding the world's shark populations in the
marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with
renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea
Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable
adventure together starts with a battle between the
Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala,
resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases,
mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and
attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for
their lives.
Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent
creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how
despite surviving the earth's history of mass
extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few
years due to human greed.
Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and
determination changes from a mission to save the
world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of
humankind.
